This maple sideboard was made by a well-known Melbourne cabinet maker and had loose as well as missing veneer and a deteriorated finish. Pale sparkly timbers are tricky to repair as the repairs have to be done perfectly no to show up.

 

This cabinet had been previously refinished but the original very thick lacquer finish had been retained in the fish design on the front doors as removing this would have ruined the picture.  This piece was finished in clear shellac.
